SFW position on Ukraine March 7th 2022

As Quakers we fully support this statement by Stop Fuelling War.

We strongly condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

  • We condemn this illegal war on Ukraine and abhor all the casualties of war, including the deaths of civilians, the displacement of people, ALL people.
  • We urge belligerents to agree to open humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians and allow humanitarian actors to access all necessary locations. Civilians should never be a target during a war.
  • We Remember our shared humanity with all people.
We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian and Russian people who are suffering injustices, and who are resisting the war, seeking peaceful resolution to the conflict at great risk to themselves.
  • Standing up for peace and against invasion and tyranny must be applied universally as well as Ukraine .In other violent conflicts where people are suffering right now, and are working for peace and/ or fleeing their homes (Yemen, Myanmar, DRC…etc)
  • We understand and accept a country’s right to protect itself and its people against foreign invasion
  • The whole world knows about the change we have to make in our behaviour in order to save the planet. And the money it will take. The prioritising of billions of Euros on this war and other wars is so out of place.
  • We encourage further discussions on how to finance peace rather than financing wars.
  • We are hopeful seeing the actions of civil society from sport and culture to commerce in standing up for peace and to prevent escalation of war.
  • We urge world leaders to continue to seek a diplomatic solution to the crisis and to never give up on dialogue, even as the violence escalates. We call for an end of all violence.
  • We urge world leaders to continue to seek a diplomatic solution to the crisis and to never give up on dialogue, even as the violence escalates. We call for an end of all violence.
  • In making excessive military preparations for war we keep recreating the same problems and not learning from history. The arms race and build up of weapons only contributes to the possibility and probability of war.
  • We hope that this will war and the subsequent nuclear threats will lead to positive reflection and action. Investments need to be made in creative, non-military and civilian solutions to aggression.
  • Standing up for peace and against invasion and tyranny must be applied universally as well as Ukraine. In other violent conflicts where people are suffering right now, and are working for peace and/ or fleeing their homes such as Yemen, Myanmar, DRC and many more.
